Interview: Dodsferd

Athens, Greece-based nihilistic black metal band Dodsferd, the solo project spawned by the perpetually bleak and seemingly psychologically unstable Nikos Spanakis, better known by his stage name, Wrath, has maintained a blistering pace since the band was first formed in 2001. Since the release of its first demo in 2003, Dodsferd has cultivated a catalog of 10 more releases, from EPs to splits and compilations, to go along with six full length albums. The band’s latest full length release, Spitting With Hatred, The Insignificance of Life, which was put out by Moribund Records on March 21st, sees Wrath and Dodsferd at its misanthropic best. Dodsferd’s main man took a brief moment to humor Taipei Metal’s humble line of questioning with some bellicosely punctuated and often truncated responses.
Taipei Metal: What is the overall message behind your latest album, Spitting With Hatred, The Insignificance of Life?
Wrath: The key sentence is “debasement of humanity”!
Taipei Metal: You often record in total solitude. How does this aid or hinder your creative process?
Wrath: I work better alone!
Taipei Metal: What is the philosophy behind the music of Dodsferd?
Wrath: I am a kind of nihilist by philosophy! I believe in nothing but my own powers! I hate everything that has to do with the masses! Politics, Religions! Only the weak gather into masses, begging for support and power! Parasitical kind of living! No one should depend on anyone!
Taipei Metal: You have mentioned sacrifices and holding to a high ideal in order to maintain the genuineness of Dodsferd. What specific sacrifices have you had to make and what is the ideal that you aspire to?
Wrath: Solitude is one of the higher sacrifices in order to protect your ideals! Surviving by your own powers without letting anyone to poison your ideas! No other details about my ideals.
Taipei Metal: In 10 years of existence, you have put out 11 releases. What drives you to be so prolific?
Wrath: My everlasting hate towards every single parasitical human being!
Taipei Metal: What is your personal interpretation of nihilism?
Wrath: Mainly, the end of the masses!
Taipei Metal: What role, if any, does irony play in your musical output?
Wrath: A big one!
Taipei Metal: What are your views on modern black metal?
Wrath: I have no views on modern black metal!
Taipei Metal: How does Dodsferd fit into the modern black metal scene?
Wrath: It doesn’t fit anywhere at all!
Taipei Metal: What do you hope to achieve with the music of Dodsferd?
Wrath: My personal psychological stability!
