Perpetually active Canadian grinders Fuck the Facts Unnamed EP sees the band at its noise drenched, uncompromising, and catchy best, with six furious tracks that exemplify its broad range of influences and seemingly inexhaustible creativity.
The opening song, which has no title, brings art grind feedback behind the guttural screams of vocalist Mel Mongeon, who is as fierce as any front man or woman in the game. Its math metal mixed with grind and pure conviction, and is about as catchy as grindcore can get.
The second song, “Loss Upon Loss”, features Topon Das’ harmonized leads over some mosh blast. This is an album with excellent production that brings the pure power of the band to the forefront and accentuates its memorable riffs—a rarity in grind. It’s accessible but undeniably heavy. Next up is “Wake”, a compact statement of punk and blast with far ranging appeal. “Time is a Dictator” is a menacing and cold interlude, with a clean intro and a haunting spoken word passage in the background.
“La Tete Hors de L’eau is a different animal from straight ahead grind acts such as Phobia. It’s more angular and jagged—challenging in a positive way, not obtuse. It’s dense, layered, visceral, emotional, dark and daring. This is a song that takes chances, raw and straight from the nerve but structured and thoughtful all at once. The EP’s closer, “Doghead”, rushes ahead with full uncontained fury. It’s over in an instant, and brings to an end this masterful, short offering from Canada’s kings and queen of grind.
